    The Wild One

    Posted in: Website

silviaiwmrA cold December day that was spent with a monster. As hinted  in the title, this car is definitely something different. This 1991 Silvia conversion creates quite the commotion. Back in 2008 the car took “Wildest Nissan” at Hot Import Nights, Seattle. I was a photographer at the event and I remember the crowd that it drew. Things have changed for the Silvia quite a bit since then. Nowadays the car is housed in the “Gem” state also known as Idaho. Who’d a thought.

The car gets noticed by many wherever it goes due to many reasons, one being the sound it makes. When behind the car you notice  the huge exhaust system. Then you start to notice the stunning paint job and start looking at the little things. Then the car gets even more intriguing. I have seen quite a few cars in my day and this is the first that I have ever seen with Veilside rims. 18×10 in the rear and 18×9 in the front, which seem to be a perfect fit. The black A and B pillars paired with the Seibon carbon fiber hood adds another nice touch. When you make it to the interior of the car a couple things catch your eye. I first noticed the Apexi AVC-R in the middle of the dash where most people have a cd player. As my eyes then wandered over the matching red Sparco seats I found the boost guage, which reads up to 2.0 bar.

When ysilviaviou turn the key all hell breaks lose. This is where this Silvia begins to become very unique. The heart of this car comes from an RB26 out of an R34 that is fed by a pair of HKS turbos.  Which happens make 733hp on 18psi and the power is put down through a R33 Skyline 5 speed gearbox and rear end. Although when I drove the car it was not at those kind of numbers, I wouldn’t  trust myself with a machine like that either. When you get past the detail and the beauty of the Veilside rims you notice the 4 piston Brembo calipers up front and the 2 piston calipers in the rear. This brake system on the Silvia is a tried and true setup as they are the OEM calipers on other cars such as the 350z, Evo and STi.

For this shoot I picked up the Silvia and had it for about 2 hours. In the short amount of time that I had the car to myself I fell in love with it. The noises that it made, the sounds from the twin turbos as it began to make boost were just incredible. The steering input and the feeling from shifting the Skyline tranny are definitley going to leave an impression with me for quite some time. I had always wanted to drive a car with the heart on soul of Godzilla and this Silvia sure had both.

“The House of Drift” well that’s what they call the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, and this is where the final round of the Formula Drift season took place this last weekend. The event definitely lived up to its name and made an amazing finale. fd7xivwmThe top 32 elimination round kicked off with some surprising results. The first driver to be eliminated was Rhys Millen in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, who was beaten by Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken 350z. Tyler would finish up the night in 2nd place being outdone by Ryan Tuerck. Tanner Foust with the Rockstar Energy Drink Scion Tc took 3rd.fd7xviiiwm
Although Ryan Tuerck took first place at this event the true victor was Chris Forsberg. After qualifying for the top 32 Forsberg only needed to eliminate one opponent to earn enough points to win the 2009 Formula Drift season. Chris accomplished this very early on after knocking out Doug VanDerBrink. When the judges made their announcement Chris was met at the starting grid by teammates and friends and hoisted in to the air.
At the victory ceremony that evening Chris not only took first place for the season, but became the first for a couple of other things. He also won the Tires.com Triple Crown bonus, and was announced as the first non-traditional race car driver to win the Formula Drift Championship.
